Practice, Practice, Practice

I have been practicing some more with my flash off the camera and finally have some to post. I'd love any thoughts about the lighting in these. How does it look to you? Is it flattering? Is it too flat or too dramatic? I want to get better. I'd love your suggestions.

The lighting is great on these. Are you just using a speedlight? Or do you have some fun studio flashes? The one thing that I might suggest is in the top photo I might have tried to reposition her so that we don't get a full ear. Nothing against my family, but ears in general can stick out like a sore thumb. That being said, your portraits are a million times better than any of the work I've done. I'll have to steal some of your photoshop techniques (I have zero at the moment). Keep it up.

I am just using my speedlight, but I bought a softbox for it to diffuse it a bit. I agree about the ear. I also wish I had better catchlights in her eyes. She was not cooperating any more at this point though so wouldn't have moved if I had repositioned her. Photoshop is the trade-off with going digital. I have learned a lot about it because I've had too. I wish I was as good at film as you are!!
