Change is Good, Right?

I am hoping that there are still a few of my few blog readers out there after the blogging famine of 2010. I know, I know--good bloggers blog regularly and don't go for 22 days (but whose counting?) with no posts and nary a picture to prove they are still living.

So--to explain! 22 days ago I declared myself on a blogging/social media holiday. At least mostly. I still read many blogs, posted some comments on Facebook and occasionally replied to some tweets on Twitter. But I didn't post anything and didn't even pretend to keep up with all I was following before. The reason for this--I had WAY more projects on my need-to-do and want-to-do lists than could possibly get done in a reasonable amount of time. I felt a little buried (still do--a bit) and just needed to catch up. I have finished a few of these projects and am in the middle of others--I am hoping they will be finished soon!

I also got 2 great learning opportunities that I just couldn't pass up. #1 was to take a class on different forms of lighting and how to mix them in different situations and #2 was to FINALLY learn Adobe Illustrator. I have desperately wanted to learn Illustrator for years and decided that now that my 1 year old is a little bigger and not nursing--this was the year. What I didn't know was that I would get the opportunity to test a new online Illustrator class by a local designer who I have followed for a while and already decided to take a class from--Alma Loveland. In order to take the class as a "tester" I had to start right away and that time had to come from somewhere, too. So the "break" got extended. (BTW, if you are interested, you can find the Adobe Illustrator 101 class at this link. This class and others on Photography and Photoshop will be available to take beginning in March--though I know some are already sold out!)

Some of the projects that I had on my want-to-do list that have recently been (mostly) completed centered around a new home for this Mom and Camera blog. I have been thinking and planning it for months--even had the domain name since summer. However, it was never high enough on the "to-do" list to get done. BUT IT IS READY NOW. So, starting tomorrow, I will no longer be posting on this blog. You can find me at www.momandcamera.com.

When I started my blog on Blogger, I had every intention of doing lots of photography related posts. After all, that is what I know well and am passionate about. However, I was at a loss for where to start and not sure if I should make them general photography posts or specific to what I know–DSLR photography. In the last few months, I developed a bit of a new vision of what I have to offer. It stemmed from the fact that I get asked photography questions ALL the time. And, if I am being completely honest, I love to answer them! I could talk about photography all day. If you question this, just ask my husband–he knows very little about photography but gets an earful regularly (and, yes, he has honed the “smile-and-nod” to a science.) I am sure there are others of you out there who have asked me a photography question and gotten more than you bargained for ;) !! So, I decided that it would be good to have a place where I could regularly talk/write about what I love to share–DSLR photography. There will continue to be plenty of other posts and photos about my life and what I love to photograph (pretty much everything–I have even photographed spiral notebooks and various other common household items and have gotten PLENTY of flack from family who question the “WHY” of those photos.)

I figured with this new vision, I needed a new blog design. I even decided to move it to it’s own domain name. I imported all my old posts from Blogger so they will remain in one place. Blogger was great, but Wordpress has more options (many of which I know nothing about) that should give just a little more function and room to grow. Until I get it all figured out, you will need to forgive a few of the unfinished areas. If I waited until this was “finished”, I would never get started. So, here’s to baby steps.

I hope all you wonderful readers of this blog will make it over to the new one and that these new photography posts won’t bore anyone TOO much. I really hope you’ll love it and comment lots and ask lots of questions. The photography posts start tomorrow! See you then.

Oh--and please forgive the "no picture." I do have plenty to share after this long famine, but just wanted to post this here without waiting any longer.

Sorry for the bland title today. The only other thing I could think of was "Ice, Ice, Baby" and I think you will all thank me that you didn't have to see that title on your Google Reader (or whatever you use to keep up on blogs.)

We've had some hazy, foggy days here. When my girls pointed out these huge icicles they intrigued me--haze and fog or not. I like how they turned out.

Can a Boy Love a Truck?

Oh let me count the ways!!! Since Christmas, he has been playing with this little truck set A LOT! We would just get it picked up and he was over asking one of his sisters (or mom and dad) to get it out again. The truck (there are actually 2 trucks but he has misplaced one already) only takes 1 AA battery, but we have gone through at least 10 batteries. The funny thing is--the truck doesn't get much "track-time." He lets the truck go around the track once. Then he picks it up, plays with the wheels, turns it off and on, and then puts it back on the track. It is delightful to watch him play.

Fresh Snow and Morning Light

I took these photos early yesterday morning. We woke up to several inches of new snow and the bright morning sunshine made the snow sparkle. I have tried several times to capture that "snow sparkle." But I have never had any success. The camera still doesn't do it justice.

Family Christmas Party

One of the family Christmas parties that we try to attend every year usually includes some sledding. It has been this way since I was quite little. The sledding hill we choose has changed over the years but not the sledding. The toboggan in these pictures hasn't missed a sledding party (that I can remember), either. This year's sledding had very cold temps but the sun was nice and bright.

Even my parents get in on the sledding action.

Hey, can anyone tell me why there were such LONG shadows? I know the sun isn't as high in the sky as in summer, but these were all taken within a half an hour of NOON. The long shadows make it look like late afternoon or early morning. Any ideas?

Notice the icy cloud of breath--it was THAT cold! Yet thanks to the sun and lots of action, it actually felt warmer than last year (20 degrees, but icy 40 mph winds).

I also managed to get a few runs in while taking LOTS of pictures.

After sledding, we gather for food, games, and gifts.

I had to include these last two pictures. Apparently, eating MULTIPLE suckers at a time is all the rage :)!

James and Heidi were married last week in the Logan Temple. I was super excited when they asked me to photograph their wedding. It was a cold winter morning when we took most of these pictures, but it didn't matter to me (because I just really enjoy every opportunity I get to take pictures) and I don't think it mattered to James and Heidi much (after all it was their WEDDING DAY and I don't think they were overly concerned about the weather!!) Brooke was along to take pictures and help me out. She snapped this one of me and if you look close you will notice that I am smiling even though I just happen to be sitting (almost laying) in the snow.

But now onto what you all really want to see.

It did snow for about half the time we were taking pictures. Not ideal conditions for photographs and we didn't photograph as long as we had planned.

5 Minutes in the Life. . . . . .{from the floor}

A Christmas Tradition

We have several Christmas traditions, but I thought I would share one of our favorites. At the beginning of December, I wrap up all of our Christmas books that have been in storage for the last year. We place them under the tree and open and read one each night in December. We have enough books to open one or more each night. The kids have a fun time trying to guess which books are which and try to open their favorites based on their size and shape.

If photography is my first addiction, then children's books are probably my second. I just love to read and find that perfect compliment of a clever or beautifully told story and amazing illustrations. The books I am sharing here today definitely have both. Here is a brief review of some of our very favorites.

1) The Night Before Christmas by Clement Moore, Illustrated by Jan Brett:

This is a classic Christmas story that we have all heard with fantastic rhyme and rhythm. Jan Brett's illustrations take this story to another level. Each 2 page spread contains a main illustration filled with beautiful Christmas details that bring the story to life. Surrounding the main illustration, Jan Brett includes other small illustrations that show little details of the main picture or allude to what is coming in the next pages of the story.

This year I replaced my 10 year-old copy of this book because it had been "well loved" and looked like this:

2) Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner, Illustrated by Mark Buehner:

I am not even sure where to start with this one. The story is told in rhyme (definitely love rhymes) and is all about what snowmen do at night while no one else is watching. As much as I love the rhyme and story, the illustrations really steal the show. Mark Buehner's illustrations are whimsical and infectious--really capturing the nocturnal adventures these snowmen have at night. And if that isn't enough, Mark Buehner always has hidden pictures in his illustrations.

3) Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck, Illustrated by Mark Buehner:

A good friend introduced me to this touching story about a boy who gives his father a most appreciated gift at Christmas by doing the milking his father wakes up so early to do. The beautiful illustrations (by the same illustrator as above) set the rustic winter scene well. I love that most of the scenes are lit by lantern and the night sky. And don't forget the hidden pictures--they are there (Do you see the nativity in the clouds?)

The story was made into a film by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 70's.

We have many other favorites in our collection, but I'd love you to share your favorite Christmas books with us. What do you love to read at Christmas?

P.S. Even my one-year-old loves this tradition. He even occasionally opens books while the girls are at school ;).

This month I have decided to try and post a picture for everyday of the month that documents our holidays. Some of these photos might have obvious holiday themes but others might just be a documentation of what is going on that day. Today I am posting the photos for the first few days of December.

First, SOMETHING WARM. How do we warm up during the cold months? THESE! I love cuddly quilts that wrap up nice and warm. This is my daughters quilt that I made for her when she was a baby.

Second, MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY DECOR. These little houses are my favorite things to put up each year. My girls enjoy them, too.

Third, SOMETHING THAT BRINGS ME JOY! Today the something that brings me joy is my son's blanket. He is sick today. This blanket brings him comfort. It goes everywhere with us (within reason!) It has magical happiness powers when he is sad or not feeling well.

Happy December--Cutting Christmas Trees

Happy December, everyone!! To start this month off right, I thought I would post some snowy winter images from our Christmas tree cutting expedition to Idaho last Friday. I think the mountains are so beautiful when they are covered in snow and the same goes for the pine trees.

We bundled everyone up warm. The babies were not sure what was up with all the snow gear and snow. It sure made walking hard for them.

They still had a great time--especially with their playful aunt!

After quite a bit of looking, everyone found their trees!

Thanksgiving Day

I spent 5 minutes or less with my camera this morning trying to get some photos of my baby (and just so you know, he will be my baby for a while still!!) The minute I clicked the shutter and captured the first frame, he ran in my direction, saying (in his own language, of course,) "COOL, mom got out that fantastic black box that is covered in delightful amounts of my favorite things--BUTTONS!" Then, the next 3 minutes were spent showing him the photos on my LCD screen and letting him push a few buttons (don't panic, no camera's were harmed in the process of taking these photos.) Thankfully, my LCD screen "magically" turns off after several seconds of not being used. When I wouldn't turn it back on, he became disinterested and allowed me to take a few more.

However, the 5 minute or less photo shoot ended when he saw the refrigerator. He knows the refrigerator usually holds a wonderful selection of his favorite foods. Like any normal boy, he was hungry and desperate for food--RIGHT NOW! Thus the photo shoot ended.

Fall is quickly coming to an end. I see snow in the forecast for the end of the week and those snowflakes are likely to start falling more frequently. However, one of the trees in my yard is still in full color and I decided to take a few before it's branches are loaded with snow.

And believe it or not, the lavender is back in bloom. I couldn't resist.

Halloween at our House

WOW--10 days since I last posted. Shocking!! The even more shocking part is that I haven't picked up my camera in a week. It sat quietly tucked away while I spent the last week setting up a brand new computer. This included installing the new Windows 7 64 bit (a BIG thanks to some good friends who helped with this), re-installing all the programs I use, importing all the catalogs, actions, brushes that I need for said programs, transferring and organizing all my old emails (some I haven't had access to for over 2 months), and replying to 2-month old emails. Then the last 2 days were spent finishing some print orders for family that have been waiting for my new computer. Today I finally feel like I am a little caught up.

So, today, I will be taking lots of pictures to make up for last week and am just now posting a few from our Halloween weekend.

Field of Dreams

While we were in Park City a few weeks ago, I spotted this little clump of grass on a ledge over-looking Deer Valley. I knew just what to do with it the next afternoon. I was especially appreciating the beautiful fall background today since the ground and mountains are all dusted a frosty white from the first snowfall this season.

It was really windy as I was taking these. I had my daughter turn into the wind to get the hair out of her face.

While in Park City for Fall Break, we met my sister and took some fall pictures for school. There was just enough color left to have some nice backgrounds. I won't even start on the view. Okay, I will, it was breathtaking! More on that later.

Out Amongst the Fall

Last weekend, during the kids' Fall Break (BTW, when is Mom's Fall Break?), we headed up to Park City for a few days to relax and enjoy the fall. The first night we were there, while the kids were watching an endless amount of Disney Channel on a VERY LARGE SCREEN TV (apparently it is better when bigger than 28"), I decided to walk outside with my camera. There was only about 30 minutes left of light, but it was that magical light right before sunset. All the leaves that were left were on fire. These are a few of my favorites.

My local Macey's grocery store is having a little "Colors of Fall" Photo Contest. I think I might enter one of these photos. Which one do you think I should enter?

A Girl and Her Apple

I snapped these pictures the other day of my cousin's daughter after we finished picking apples. She was extremely excited about holding the apple and after we finished she did a great job of polishing off the apple (for a 1 year old.) I actually love that the apple is in these pictures. I certainly adds a little "fallness."

We spent yesterday at my Grandma's house picking apples. It is an annual tradition for as many relations as can to gather and pick the apples from my Grandma's many apple trees. It has been a few years since we were able to go. It was a beautiful day to be up in the trees loading up buckets of apples. Here are the fruits of our labors!

And within the next few weeks, whatever apples have not been eaten by my fruit-loving children, will be made into homemade applesauce!!

I Survived.........

the Swine Flu, that is. And since all the info I've read says it is horribly contagious, I am just waiting patiently for the rest of my family to get it. But while I am waiting, I thought I'd do what all good blogger's would do and blog about it.

When I first heard about the outbreak of Swine Flu (known in all "official documentation" from our school and on TV as H1N1) I immediately thought of other epidemics such as the black plague or polio. I thought of rats, and much sickness and suffering with long term effects. I was scared, actually TERRIFIED and PARANOID probably sum it up better. I consider myself a germ-o-phobe and hate being sick or having my family be sick. Slowly, over the last month, I started to hear of others in our neighborhood and school who had caught the swine flu. My paranoia escalated. I sent my kids to school with hand sanitizer in their pockets and instructions to use it frequently.

Then, 2 weeks ago, I started getting a sore throat. I had been around other kids with colds and figured I had caught their cold. Sure enough, that sore throat quickly developed into some serious nasal congestion that my usual squirt of nasal spray did nothing to help. So I did what any self respecting cold sufferer does--I broadcast my woes on twitter and facebook. Now all you that think nothing good comes of social networking need to know that this move actually resulted in some good advice about medications that might help and a recommendation for specific tissues that have now become my favorites (if you must know--Puffs plus Lotion with Vicks.)

Then I got a fever! I was wasted for 24 hours until my fever broke. Fortunately, it happened to fall on the weekend when I am supposed to lay around watching TV (a.k.a General Conference.) Once the fever broke, the nasal congestion and cough persisted (still have a little of this.) After having these symptoms for over a week and hearing of MANY more in our neighborhood with Swine Flu, I decided to look up what the symptoms of Swine Flu were. I compared them to the symptoms I had and proceeded to check off EVERY SINGLE ONE.

I've tried to be cautious and wash my hands. I haven't gone many places to spread the germs. However, I am now just waiting for my kids to get it. I am not paranoid any more. I am thinking that even if they do get it--we will survive this global pandemic. And unless their symptoms are totally different than mine, it will be better than the sickness my family endured at Bear Lake last year. Though, considering the amount of tissue I used, US tissue manufacturers may want to increase their production--especially if their product includes lotion and Vicks. Hey H1N1 might even be good for the economy :)!

My Crazy Mind

This post has nothing to do with photography, but since I couldn't post without a picture, here is a photo of something that saved my life today.

You may think I am exaggerating. But I am not. I NEED a notebook. I really do. I can't function properly without one. I have been without one for several months and I CAN TELL! There have been little random pieces of paper flying around my computer desk with lists, thoughts, ideas, things I need to remember or do written haphazardly all over them.

I am certain that many of you who read this blog could list an innumerable amount of quirks that you associate with me. And some of you may even know of my need for a notebook. I have chalked up this need for a Staples (definitely prefer a store brand because the paper feels nicer--Mead notebooks have paper with a rough feel) 1-subject (just the right amount of pages--by the time I reach the end I am ready to whip out a nice fresh one, plus they are really cheap in July and August) wire bound (seems to work best) notebook to the fact that I have a crazy, frenzied mind. Without the use of a notebook, my mind goes in 30 thousand different directions all in one day. It might start with the kids and what needs to get done to get them to school, but from there it explodes like a spider web in all different directions.

Now, if any of you have this type of mind, you will know what kind of productivity results from a racing mind. For those of you who are not afflicted with this disease, I'll paraphrase--nothing. NOTHING! Without some place to make a list to focus my mind, or write down some of the thoughts and ideas that race around up there everyday, I am destined to EXTREME amounts of unproductiveness (Blogger says this isn't a word, but I think my made-up word gets my point across!) Over the years, I haven't found anything that works better. So, after a few months of dysfunction, today, I got a new notebook out of the closet, calmed my mind by writing some lists and ideas down on paper. So today I am thankful for this wonderful 70 sheet notebook that cost me just a few pennies.

I happen to think my kids are cute. I think all parents think the same way I do of their own kids. When I take pictures of any kids, I try to capture those natural, joyful expressions that are unique to them. Sometimes that is a toothy laugh. Sometimes that is a reserved smile. Sometimes that is a sly, mischievous look. And sometimes those expressions are not smiles at all. Whatever the look--I love it when I capture that twinkle in the eye that is unique to them. I think I caught that in some of these pictures. Warning: there are lots of photos!

Short Break

The flowers from last week only provided a short break for my kids from being in front of my camera. Last Friday, we headed out to capture a few more outdoor pictures before the cold weather moves in permanently. NOW, I am still hoping for a few more good days so that I can get some pictures in the fall leaves. We'll see if mother nature grants my wish!

This pose and location was her idea. I couldn't help but comply.

Now to decide which ones will get blown up big for the wall. Any suggestions?

Closer Still

As promised, I tried out my macro on the flowers from Monday's post. It was fun to have my macro lens back on my camera and a reason to use it waiting at the table. I never use a tripod when taking these macro shots (a real macro photographer would probably gasp in horror at that confession) and if you look closely you can probably tell. However, I am pleased with them and since I am the "client" in this case--that is all that matters.

My Flowers Are Back

BYU had their first home football game this last weekend. Guess what that means? My flowers are back. By MY flowers, I mean the flowers that my husband brings home after each football game is over. These were all taken with my 50 mm 1.8. It is the lens that has been on my camera for a while. I didn't have much time today to take these photos so I didn't switch to the macro lens, but if the flowers look good tomorrow I will probably just have to break it out. Enjoy!

Rejected!

Pretty much everyday, as I take pictures and upload them to my computer, I sort through and pick favorites and reject others for various reasons (usually technical issues on my part or subject problems such as closed eyes.) This is all very natural and part of the digital process that I have set up for myself. Today, I decided to see what I could do with some of the pictures I have sent to the "rejected" pile over the last few weeks. A little Lightroom/Photoshop love and I find them acceptable--despite their flaws.

Smiles are over-rated, don't you think?

Here Comes the Sun {flowers}

The LOVE the sunflower weeds that are so in bloom right now. I have passed this little field of sunflowers twice now without taking a single picture. Let's just say that I was in no condition to take pictures the previous times (one of those times included a broken tooth and cut lip--it has been a rough week.) Today, I knew I would be passing by and I came prepared with my camera. All were taken at f/2.2 (because of this challenge) except for this first one.

My husband and I got a chance to go to Dallas, Texas to see the BYU Football game vs. Oklahoma. This would be the first time that my husband and I had had been on a trip by ourselves in 2 years (mostly due to the cute one year-old that is sitting on my lap as I type this.) It was great fun and the fact that BYU was able to pull off the upset win was definitely the highlight. I am posting a few (okay--actually A LOT) of pictures from our trip.

We stayed at the Gaylord Texan. It is an amazing hotel with several acres of indoor gardens and walkways.

We were able to tour the new $1.3 billion dollar Dallas Cowboys Stadium the day before the football game.

The black streaks that you see on the field are little pieces of rubber that are used under the artificial turf to give it some bounce. While we were touring the stadium, there were several trucks on the field working the rubber into the turf and "vacuuming" up the extra pieces.

Did you notice the jumbo screen in those pictures? The HUGE HD display is 72 feet high and 160 feet long and spans nearly 60 yards. It weighs as much as a full jumbo airliner and uses 30 million light bulbs!!

We also toured the Texas Rangers stadium as well. They are both located in Arlington, Texas and within walking distance of each other.

I also learned some photographic lessons:
1) Don't take a camera on a trip that you haven't used for over a year. You won't remember how to perform some vital functions on the camera despite the fact that you think it is pretty similar to your current camera!
2) Camera's manufactured prior to 2008 shouldn't be used at ISO settings of higher than 400. The result will be some really ugly noise!

I debated for several days before the trip whether I should take my older and slightly smaller Nikon D70 on this trip. I eventually decided to do this and upon taking my first picture regretted my decision for the above reasons. I got some okay pictures but with each click of the shutter I wished I had my current camera. If you are still reading this--thanks for sticking with me through ALL these photos!

I was inspired this morning by a couple of large bowls of tomatoes that are sitting on my counter just waiting for my kids to come home and devour them. They are waiting there because I don't eat tomatoes. I think they can be pretty, I think there are many fabulous products that result from tomatoes (ketsup for one!), but I would never just pick up a fresh tomato and slice it up for lunch. I am prepping myself for all the tomato-loving backlash I am going to get from this admission. Fortunately, my kids are not like me and will eat lots of tomatoes.

Despite the fact that I won't eat these--I had fun photographing them this morning.

The Challenge

I am still alive. I am guessing that most of you figured that but I just wanted to make it clear.

I really meant to blog about my challenge to myself several weeks ago. However, my computer decided to stop working 2 weeks ago. After several hard days with no computer and seeing that my new computer wasn't going to even ship for 10-14 days, I decided to try a self-imposed "unplugged" few weeks. So the blog post I had planned in my head never happened.

The challenge I gave my self for the next few months is to mainly use my 50mm lens at an aperture of 1.8 to 2.2 (I say mainly because I knew there would need to be a few exceptions). I decided to do this so I can get better familiar with this lens and improve my ability to shoot at low apertures. Everything in photography takes practice and this is no exception. Wish me luck!

These were all shot at f/2.2 with shutter speeds around 1/1600.

We returned from our trip to Bear Lake one week ago yesterday and I haven't posted any images which some might find amazing. It turns out, I just had TOO many other pictures to get ready for others that I didn't have time to do much with the pictures I took last weekend until now. So, today, and in the next few days to come, I will post a few from our trip. The weekend we spent in Bear Lake wasn't really that warm. Part of each day seemed to have wind, rain, or a mixture of the two.

Today's theme is "The Beach." It was actually quite cold when we first arrived at the beach. So if you see goosebumps, you'll know why. It warmed a bit throughout the day, but if the sun ever went behind a cloud you about wanted to grab a jacket.

Yes--he is eating sand. Please remember from this post that I would prefer not to know all the disgusting things that are found in sand.

Bear Lake probably has the best sandy beaches in Utah for building sand castles and playing in. (I am sure the diehard Lake Powell fans will probably claim it has good beaches, too, but when we were there, they didn't really stand out to me.) Thanks Aaron for living so close to a great lake and great sandy beaches!!

I just had to share these 2 images of my little boy. He LOVES anything with buttons but like most 14 month olds he is especially enamored with the phone.

And--he still has the cutest, chubbiest baby feet. I just love chubby baby feet. And don't ask me what that yellow stuff in the picture is, because it is probably part of a chewed up stick. And, since I am just trying to ignore what he puts in his mouth right now, please do not bring attention to the fact that the grasshoppers probably chewed on it first right after the ants pooped on it (do ants poop? I really don't want to know that either.) I just try to ignore everything that goes into his mouth and hope he lives until he's 2 instead of dying of Grasshopper Flu. Never heard of that? Well, I am sure that important scientists will discover it soon! Boys--what's a mom gonna do?

We are back from Bear Lake, but I have been too busy with pictures and getting kids ready for school that I haven't been able to post. So, I just wanted to share one image from our trip.

I am guessing that you noticed that it is out of focus. I did that on purpose. I love the bokeh (or the little blurry circles) that the reflecting water creates. Sometimes out of focus is more interesting that in focus!!

I went on a little nature walk with two of my daughters to look for flowers and explore. I had really wanted to participate in this Photowalk event, but couldn't because it conflicted with our reunion. The Canyon Reunion Part 3

I have posted about The Canyon before on my blog, but get ready for the longest post ever. I have lots of pictures from our reunion time in The Canyon. It is such a beautiful area and my grandparents have worked hard to make it an area where we can all come and enjoy our time together.

The Park Reunion Part 2

It has been a busy summer, but it doesn't seem like school should be on the verge of starting. I have been meaning to blog these images for a few days now, and just haven't found the minutes to sit down and share them.

These images were all taken the first night of our reunion. I was actually quite hot and tired after eating dinner and just wanted to sit and relax. But I happened to glance around and saw my aunt and cousin chatting in the sunshine.

I saw the beautiful light hitting them from behind and remembered that it was that beautiful time of evening when the light is warm and soft. I decided to venture down to the park where all the kids were playing to see what I could find. What I found was LOTS of beautiful kids bathed in LOTS of beautiful light.

Okay--I guess there were some beautiful adults bathed in beautiful light as well.

These are probably some of my favorites from the night. Love this kind of light!!

Slip and Slide Reunion Part 1

I gave myself one week to go through all the candid pictures I took. There were a lot of them. All told it was 900+ pictures. I was even surprised by that number when I was uploading them to my computer. Here is the first installment.

It is a rare summer family reunion that doesn't include some form of water entertainment. In fact--I don't believe I have ever been to one that didn't. The kids had a lot of fun playing with the Slip n' Slide, bubbles, and the crazy sprinkler.

But water activites weren't the only activities going on. Lots of the older kids and adults were golfing and several of the women were caring for babies and making quilts.

By Morning Light

I love morning light but I am rarely out and about early enough to catch the great light it provides. Last weekend, while we were visiting family in Idaho, my son and I were up early looking out the window. I saw these average looking weeds bathed in beautiful light. I picked up my camera and headed outside--in my PJs and scary morning hair no less! I probably wouldn't normally do this at home because, most likely, several of my neighbors would be driving by my house on their way to work or school and I am just vain enough to care if they see me in all my "morning magnificence." But, thanks to the fact that the place we were staying was surrounded by fields, I ventured out and got the shot.

Family Reunion Part 2

The second day was the day of activities. We started with games. Everyone is such good sports and only a little competitive :D!! (Do you ever have a "brain lapse" and forget how to spell words? Just happened to me with "competitive." I actually had to pull out the dictionary to figure it out.)

Then there was time to cool off in the pool. And when I say "cool-off" I mean COOL. This pool is not heated. Apparently, it didn't bother them TOO much because they swam for hours.

Family Reunion Part 1

Each and every summer we attend several family reunions. We try not to miss any since it is one of the few chances I have to catch up with Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, cousins and 1st cousins once removed (my cousins' kids.) Most of these reunions last a few days and are filled with lots of good food, games, fun and great conversations. We returned from our first reunion last week and I thought I would post several of the images I took while there. There will be two posts for this reunion and probably the same drill for the others since I tend to take lots of images.

Today's images are from Day one! This first set is mostly of my kids since the first day was a short day--meaning I ran out of light to take many pictures outside.

I had to take these pictures. I have some similar ones from about 3 years ago when we held this family reunion at the same location. In some of the other ones, she was holding a cousin's hand. I couldn't duplicate that picture exactly because that particular cousin wasn't at this reunion.

Then I saw these really pretty flowers.

And then, I told them to pick some flowers. The flowers made for some great pictures, but I found out later we weren't supposed to pick them. Oh well, the flowers in the field will die, but I have these recorded forever!

Deer Creek

We spent part of our 4th of July weekend boating at Deer Creek with my brother, sister and some of her friends. Here are some pictures from our day:

A few from the shore while the others were trying to ski (I say try because it was fairly windy.) Deer Creek was really full so there wasn't much shore to play on.

Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House

We have been enjoying all the nice warm sun of the last few days. I am pretty sure that we were ALL vitamin D deficient since there was much whining, fighting, and grumpiness (mom included) during the 3 straight weeks of rain we had in June! It might be hard to prove that diagnosis without some blood work, but as a mom who has accurately diagnosed many colds in my day, I am pretty sure that our "illness" was caused by low levels of vitamin D. We have been working to cure ourselves by sitting in the sun and running through the sprinklers. Here is the proof.

Pure Joy

My son is a happy baby as long as he has food, sleep, and isn't hurt. We get lots of smiles and happy looks and I love EVERY one.

However, what makes my heart sing just a little bit more are the moments of unbridled joy and laughter. A baby's joy is so pure and unchecked by any past experience and just oozes from them so naturally. It's contagious!!

It doesn't seem like the title of this post should be shocking for JUNE--but it is--at least in Utah. We are up to 73 degrees and it is probably the warmest and driest day we have had in more than 2 weeks (don't quote my one this--I am not an almanac.) We took advantage of the warmth and did a little weeding and a little photographing (SHHH--don't tell my husband or he will know I didn't slave away all day :)!) Here are just a couple from our day.

P.S. I don't normally do textures on photos. However, when I took this picture, I envisioned some texture from the moment I took it. What do you think?

Been Through Hail

A few days ago, while sitting at my computer, I noticed a bud on one of my rose bushes. It was a perfect shape and I could tell it would open soon. I wanted to capture it with my camera, but it was extremely windy during the day (not a recipe for sharpness) and rainy that night. This same scenario was repeated over and over the next few days. Yesterday, despite the heavy rain, wind and pebble-sized hail it bloomed wide open. Today, with a short break in the string of thunderstorms that have plagued us the last few weeks, I grabbed some photos. Probably because of the pelting it endured yesterday, it's petals are a little scarred. I think they make it even more beautiful. You can even see several raindrops from yesterday's rain still resting on the petals.

I checked out this rose bush, too. I love the pink color and the perfect shape of the roses on this bush.

Then I checked out some of the other things that are blooming at my house right now, too.

This last one is my favorite from today!!

For the Love of Reading

About a week ago, at 10 o'clock, at night, my oldest daughter came out of her bedroom telling me I needed to get my camera and come into her room. On a side note, I used to be shocked when she wandered out at 10 or 11 o'clock but it happens so regularly now--apparently most books are just to good to stop reading at an appropriate hour. I was a little skeptical of this supposed "photo-OP" so I first went to her room without my camera to see what could be so worthy of a picture so late at night. The minute I entered her room, I quickly returned to the counter to grab my camera and flash (after all, it is dark in a bedroom at 10 o'clock). I snapped the following picture of my middle daughter out cold and frozen with her book still firmly in her hands. Must be a good book!!

Weekend at Goblin Valley

This weekend, after some very crazy weeks of basement stuff, our family took a much needed overnight trip to Goblin Valley. It is a beautiful spot in the middle of the Utah desert surrounded by. . . . NOTHING. Sometimes NOTHING can be beautiful, though.

Much of the scenery on the drive to Goblin Valley looks like the above. But as you get closer--you start to see this:

Those little funny rock "blobs" are the "Goblins". In the state park, there are several places to climb around on the "goblins." My kids loved the climbing part.

And on the drive out of Goblin Valley, we saw this:

I am editing this post to just emphasize the climbing part of this trip. Now that I am looking back on some more of these pictures, I am wondering if this activity was safe. Luckily, my children all survived.

Sunday Thought

The last few weeks have been nothing short of chaotic! I am amazed that I survived. I really needed this advice but am not sure that I could have even processed it. My mind has been overwhelmed with the basic things to do each day to maintain family, finishing up school, work going on in the basement, and things that needed to get done and scheduled next. The good news is that my mind doesn't feel so overwhelmed this morning. Not sure if that is because it is Sunday or because we had a short vacation as a family this weekend or because the carpet is now installed in the basement and I feel that the rest of the basement project is a short run downhill. We'll see.

The Day He Turned ONE!

I honestly can't believe he is one. I can't believe he has lived in our house and been cared for by us for one year. And yet, the chaos of last May seems forever ago and he definitely has grown a lot since we brought home all 5 lb. 10 oz. of his little self. He has survived all the attention that five adoring people can bestow on a little baby. He has survived all the extra mothering of three older sisters. He has survived having his picture taken more than 2300 times (at least that I could count.) And he has thrived despite the fact that his family forgot some of what it was like to have a little baby in the house. He has truly been a delight for our little family and we can't imagine not having this delightful little boy. He isn't really one for staying in one place for more than a fraction of a second, but here are a few pictures from the day he turned ONE!

He's getting bigger. There is no two ways about it. But even with this knowledge, I wasn't really ready for what happened yesterday. I was sure I was safe for a little while longer. I was pretty sure that I had at least one more month before my baby started walking. He has been taking a step here and a step there. One step usual led to one SPLAT on his diapered bum. However, yesterday, my girls decided to test his walking skills. I was pretty sure he might take 1 or 2 steps. I was not prepared for the 6 or 7 that he consistently took. I grabbed the camera. Here are some of his first steps.

And just one outtake. Love the look on his face as he starts to fall. He wasn't crying--just realizing that he is on the way down!

I am guessing that I might not have one more month. Especially, since his sisters want to practice with him all the time now.

On My Mind and a Graduate

Do you ever have weeks when there are just so many things running around in your mind that you think you might go crazy? Ideas, decisions, events, school, appointments, activities, basic house stuff, and more have been swirling around and around my head and causing me a little grief. This kind of mental chaos makes me distracted and unproductive. I have never been really great at multi-tasking but I have found motherhood is stretching my abilities in this area more and more. Weeks like this just make me yearn for those quiet-nothing-on-the-schedule-days that seem to happen more rarely than ever now. With my mind going crazy, I just haven't been able to focus on what to post. So today, I will leave you with some Senior pictures I took the other day. He graduated last week and is on to new things! This little boy of mine is going to be one soon. I can hardly believe that much time has passed since he was born. I thought I would give you a little glimpse into his one year old world.

He has lots of nicknames, but the one that applies best right now is lightning. He crawls at lightning speed (especially if there is an open door), can empty a drawer at lightning speed, and eats at lightening speed. His favorite food is bananas and his teeth seem determined to all come at once. He currently has 5 teeth with a sixth ready to poke through any day. His favorite toy is the phone or a ball. He loves to throw and roll the ball back and forth.

He sits in this position regularly throughout the day.

He loves to go outside and will pound on the door until someone will take him out. Usually he can find a sister to oblige him.

He has changed our world in many wonderful ways this last year. I can't imagine what another will bring.

Watching Paint Dry

Sorry for the lame title, but I am tired (yes--it is only 8 p.m. but I am what I am and I AM ready for bed.) I HAVE been watching the paint in the basement dry for the last few days. However, luckily for you, I haven't created a time lapse of the paint drying. I have something slightly more visually exciting.

I spent last weekend with my mom, sister's and sister's in-law in Deer Valley. We enjoyed each others company, got creative (a.k.a made bracelets, earrings, and hair bows), ate treats, and shopped. It was a lot of fun for someone (a.k.a ME) who hasn't been anywhere without my kids in, oh, FOREVER!!! Here's a few snaps from the weekend.

Morning Light

A Little Boy--OUTSIDE!

My little boy has discovered the outside. We have been playing outside on nice days for the last few months. This Spring, those days were few and scattered between lots of rainy/snowy days. However, the last week or two have had more nice days than not and he now he crawls over to the door and looks out longingly until his mom or sisters will oblige and take him outside. He has discovered that there are lots of new things to explore out there. Rocks, dirt, grass, dirt, cement, rocks, and dirt are just a few of the things he has found enjoyable (notice the theme!) Please note that he is still crawling and I just cringe a little when he crawls on cement--especially if he is wearing shorts. I am sure I will get over it since walking/running would be so much worse. Those joys are coming soon! Whatever will I do?

Kids Portraits Part 3

By this, I mean that when I go to take her picture she automatically gives me that super unnatural, cheesy smile. It takes some work to get her natural expressions. Here are my favorites of her:

While we were taking her pictures, my husband thought it would be fun to shake the trees a little and make the blossoms fall. She has a few blossoms on her jacket and hair. I didn't clone them out because she loved having the blossoms fall on her.

Kids Portraits Part 1

I have been LOVING the beautiful spring blossoms (as I am sure you have been able to tell by previous posts too numerous to link to) and wanted to get a few pictures of my kids in the blossoms. I had a couple of days set aside to do this, but unfortunately we were rained out both times. I was determined and decided to try again last Friday. As we drove to our location, rain began beating down on the windshield. I kept driving anyway crossing my fingers that the rain would lighten up a bit. By the time we got there, it wasn't raining and we were able to take a few despite the extremely heavy cloud cover. The lighting wasn't optimal and we ended up having only a small window before it did begin to rain A LOT. I wanted to post some of them here. Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get much productive time between an almost 1 year-old, school, and the basement project. So now the posts will have to be spread over a few days. Here is the first installment.

Dandelions Are Beautiful, TOO!

Well, since I played favorites the other day by showing you my favorite tree, I thought I would show you that even WEEDS can be beautiful, too. About 2 weeks ago, I took some pictures of some dandelions and found they were actually quite pretty. I meant to post those pictures then, but didn't. I have taken even more the last few days and want to share them here. These dandelions are actually quite pretty. I love the bright yellow color. I love the fluffy seeds that just beg to be blown away. My husband hates to have these in our yard so I had to scout around to find them (don't tell him, but there are a few in our yard, too.)

More Progress. . . . . . .

It has been a slow week here on the blog. But, for me, a slow week here on the blog has meant good news for me and our project in the basement. I have taken several "progress pictures" downstairs over the last few weeks but they just haven't made it here. Today, I took some more and am posting them as proof that progress is being made! For some of you this may be the most uninteresting post I have ever made (okay, except for the other basement post.) I accept that and pledge to post more interesting photography-related items this next week. For today, I am relishing the fact that our basement now "looks" like usable space. Hopefully just a few more weeks of dust.

This space is affectionately known as the "Wall o' Closets." Lots of storage space for STUFF!

Bedroom closets. These make me happy just looking at them.

But there is still lots of this:

hanging around. There is still an unending amount of dust blowing around my house. There is still an amazing amount of STUFF (i.e. basement supplies, food storage, etc.) being stored in our Massive Storage Area formerly known as our bedrooms. In all, there is still much work to be done. BUT, it is progress and for today I am happy with that.

My Favorite Flowering Trees

With my kids I try not to play favorites. But with trees--I can't help it. After all, they don't have feelings, right? All the flowering trees have been so beautiful over the last few weeks. I have tried to capture some of their timeless beauty to show you here. However, today I am here to show you my all-time favorite of the flowering trees. I have 2 in my yard because they are my favorite. I like the leaf and the beautiful richly-colored blooms in the spring. They are especially beautiful right now. I present my flowering crab apple tree.

I am so happy they bloomed so beautifully this year. Last year there were only a few blooms. I hoped for better luck this year and my wish was granted.

And now for my second favorite of the flowering trees. I only have one picture to share because I don't have this tree in my yard and so I had to photograph a neighbor's. Sadly, while photographing it, rain began pouring down so I only got a couple. Hopefully, I'll get another chance. I present the flowering cherry (I think--any experts please correct me if I am wrong.) I just love the full ruffly (probably not a word) blooms. They look like little miniature pink pom-poms.

The Magic of 80 Degrees

We have had a little rule at our house for the last 7 years that has saved me hours of discussion and arguing in the Spring. This rule originated when my kids were small. The minute the snow started melting and the sun started shining they were always asking if they could swim or run through the sprinklers. Sometimes the temperature was only in the 50s when they would ask me, so I made the 80 Degree Rule. The rule goes like this--there will be no water play until the outside temperature is at least 80 degrees. This rule has turned 80 degrees into a benchmark of sorts for my children. This last week, they watched anxiously to see if we would hit the magical 80 degree mark. When they checked the thermometer and it said 79 degrees, I caved. In the blink of an eye they had the sprinkler spraying on the front lawn. And because water is like a drug to children (okay--at least to mine and some others I know), it wasn't long until there were 12 kids outside playing. Now it looks like we will have a few cooler days before we have any more warm ones. That's okay with me because my house and I need to recover from all the fun :)!

A Fun Engagement

I love it when I get the chance to take engagement pictures. These two were very relaxed and fun to photograph. They met at a BYU Basketball game where they were set up by some friends in a tricky sort of way. Hope you like.

The Trees Are Blooming and The Bees Are Buzzing

These are just opening. I can't wait to see them fully bloom!

Today, I was out taking some pictures of the kids playing and I wandered to the blossoms on the trees. There were lots of bees checking out the blossoms, too. I caught one. I guess I am a little like the bees!

An Outing Amongst the Blossoms

It has been Spring Break for us, but there has been little "Spring" involved because of the cold and snow. I wanted desperately to spend some of our break (after all--because we home school any break is a break for me, too) to get out and take some photos in the Spring blossoms--something I can't easily do most days. The snow ALMOST deterred me. It did deter most of my children. One was still willing. Here are a few of them.

And, as much as I love the color I decided to try a black and white. I liked it. What do you think?

How Cookies Might Come To Taste Like Lysol

Last week, like many families, we celebrated Easter. Each year we color eggs, and each year I PLAN to make Easter cookies. I say "PLAN" because it doesn't always happen even though I PLAN to do it.

When my oldest daughter announced last week that she would like to make some cookies (BTW, she has become quite good at baking and following a recipe) I suggested that we make sugar cookies in Easter shapes. She was totally on board and made the dough--following the recipe exactly.

While the dough was cooling in the fridge, I asked my kids to clean up their "zones." At our house, "zones" are the areas of the house that each child is responsible for keeping clean each day. The zones rotate each week. My middle daughter had the kitchen zone. She cleaned it up haphazardly while watching a show. As the last step in cleaning the kitchen, she wiped down the counters with Lysol. I saw her LIBERALLY spray the counter with Lysol spray and then went back to what I was doing. The next thing I knew, my oldest had sprinkled flour on the counter to roll out her dough. I asked whether the counter had been wiped down well and allowed to dry BEFORE she spread out the flour and dough. She nodded and continued cutting out the cookies.

After they had baked, but before they were frosted, I snatched a piece of a broken cookie. It tasted extremely bitter. I couldn't figure out why it would taste that way. I quizzed my daughter about the ingredients she used. Sugar--yep. Butter--yep. Baking powder--yep. Salt--yep. However, after a few minutes and another taste or two, I remembered the Lysol on the counter. That HAD to be the problem. She had rolled out the cookies before the Lysol spray had been wiped up. We ended up throwing all the cookies away. We saved the frosting my girls had already made in hopes of attempting the cookies again. Last night, we again mixed the dough and rolled out the cookies in Easter/Spring shapes. But this time, we left out the Lysol. They tasted great!!

It's Beginning

Occasionally, as I drive around, I am seeing some of the flowering trees bloom. This one is just starting to open up. I wonder if the cold weather we are supposed to get this week will affect the blooms? Just one for now.

It's been 5 WHOLE Days.....and a winner!

It has been 5 whole days since I last posted here--and although in reality that is ONLY 5 days and less than one week--it feels like forever. It has been a busy week. We took the computer to be fixed, painted eggs, made Easter cookies that tasted like Lysol (don't ask), watched the basement be "walled" with sheet rock, brought the computer home (because they said it was going to be 4 WHOLE days and that is TOO long to be without a computer), tried to fix the computer ourselves (with some advice from a friend--so far so good), traveled to visit family, picked lots of expensive stuff for the basement and celebrated a wonderful Easter weekend! That is the quick sum-up.

102--Yeah!

I noticed a month or so ago that I was close to 100 posts. I even saw it creeping into the mid 90's. However, last week I somehow missed that I had hit 100 posts. I am attributing it to the fact that things have just been so busy around here with construction of the basement (a more likely answers is probably my mommy "dementia".) So, in honor of my forgetfulness and my 102nd post, I would like to choose someone from among those who leave a comment on this post to receive an 8x10 (or smaller) of any of the pictures that I have posted on my blog. For some of you, that could be a picture of yourself or family. Just post a comment here and Sunday I will have my girls pick a winner.

I found these yesterday. They are beautiful!!

As a side note, I will be without my computer for a few days (I hope that is all) due to some computer issues. Posts here might be in limited quantity for the rest of the week.

Photographic Torture

Yes, you can officially turn me in. I admit that today in an attempt to get some cute 10 month pictures of my son (yes--he is that old and yes--I can hardly believe it) I performed a form of baby torture that resulted in the following pictures:

And although he is obviously sad in these pictures, I can tell you that I think his sad face and wrinkly nose are worth recording. They might come in handy someday and they make me SMILE!!

The best of the day--he was one-thousandth of a second away from crawling out of the frame--his most common trick for escaping the camera.

P.S. I have attempted to post a few times today (and even once yesterday) however, my computer keeps randomly shutting down. I am still somewhat in denial, but I believe this may be the beginning of a serious problem that I will have to have checked out. If I have to go multiple days without a computer--I may be insane when I return. Just warning you!!
